Castle of Mandawa

Castle of Mandawa

History

Nestled in the heart of the Aravali hills, Mandawa is a charming town in the Shikhawati region of Rajasthan. Known for its havelis and forts, Mandawa is famous for its historic monuments and is also a popular filming location for Bollywood movies. Founded in the 18th century by Mandujat, the town boasts a rich and transparent history. It was later taken over by the Rajput rulers.

One of the most captivating landmarks of Mandawa is Castle Mandawa, also known as Mandawa Fort. This fort is not only a key historical site in the town but also an important monument in Rajasthan. Built in the 18th century by Nawal Singh, the first direct descendant of the Shekhawati rulers, the fort played a significant role in establishing the town of Mandawa.

Architectural Marvel

Castle Mandawa attracts visitors not only for its historical significance but also for its remarkable architecture and vibrant paintings that adorn both the exterior and interior of the fort. The entrance features a beautifully painted arch, setting the tone for what lies inside. Many of the paintings depict the love story of Lord Krishna and Radha, while delicate mirror work enhances the charm of the fort.
The interior of the castle remains as it was in its heyday, preserving antique collections from the Rajputana era and paintings that showcase various cultural themes. The fort beautifully reflects the essence of Rajputana and Shekhawati traditions. The best time to visit is between October and March. Although Castle Mandawa has been converted into a heritage hotel, it still retains the regal allure of the Rajputana era.

A Cultural Symbol

The fort stands as a testament to Rajasthan’s rich heritage and vibrant culture. It is often referred to as an « open art gallery » due to its stunning collection of paintings that captivate visitors with their beauty and intricate designs. Castle Mandawa is a must-visit destination for tourists and holds immense historical importance, not only for Mandawa but for all of Rajasthan. The fort’s fusion of royal and rustic elements leaves visitors both enchanted and awestruck.
